Aviation and the Economy
18 October 2007
The benefits of aviation are overstated. Big claims are made about the economic benefits of aviation. The benefits do not take account of all the subsidies the aviation industry receives. Very often the aviation industry’s subsidy comes at the expense of other industries. The UK tourist industry, for example, is badly losing out because of the tax breaks aviation receives. This means that from being essential to the health of the economy, the expansion of Heathrow may well harm the wider UK economyThe Economic Benefits of Heathrow

HACAN commissioned the consultants Bureau Veritas** to carry out a study to assess if, and how, flight paths over London have changed over the past 10 years. The study, No Place to Hide, was paid for by a grant from the Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone. It just covered London. It did not cover areas to the west of the airport, but the findings outlined would be applicable to those areas. The NOW! Campaign
